WATCH: Hollywood actors to SAG retirement fund: drop fossil fuels!

Across the country, working people are under attack – from extreme weather disasters to financial systems still tied to climate-destroying industries.

This is clear in Hollywood, where even as actors, writers, and crew members fight for fair wages and safe working conditions, their retirement fund is quietly investing millions in the fossil fuel industry.

Right now, at least $100 million of the SAG-Producers Pension Plan is invested in fossil fuel companies — the same corporations driving climate collapse.

That’s why more than 300 actors, including Jane Fonda, Don Cheadle, Rosario Dawson, and Mark Ruffalo, have joined the Retire Big Oil campaign to demand divestment and push for a climate-safe pension plan.

Big Oil is in 99% of retirement plans, and they’ve been losing us all a LOT of money. Getting out of fossil fuels is one of the most impactful climate actions we can take.

Two years after a historic strike, and as the heart of the entertainment industry – LA – rebuilds from climate-fueled fires, actors are uniting for the first time to address the risks of their own retirement fund contributing to the climate crisis.

As Todd Paglia, Stand.earth Executive Director, said: “As LA rebuilds from devastating wildfires, and with fossil-fueled fire season now year-round, the SAG-Producers Pension Plan has the opportunity to lead in securing a sustainable future for its members. This fossil fuel divestment call is coming from working artists and creators who are the foundation of the labor union. Together, we’re urging SAG-AFTRA to align its investments with the values we fight for on- and off-screen: sustainability, justice, and long-term security.”

Financial analysis affirms that fossil fuels have underperformed over the last decade-plus, and face long-term headwinds. As investors on the longest-term horizons, it is within the SAG-Producers Pension Plan’s fiduciary duty to divest from fossil fuels and reinvest in climate-safe solutions.

This isn’t just about a single pension plan. It’s about using every lever we have to dismantle fossil fuel influence, hold cultural institutions accountable and build momentum for bold climate leadership.

More than 1,660 institutions representing over $40 trillion in assets have already committed to divest from fossil fuels. But less than 0.2% of those commitments come from cultural institutions like the SAG Producers Pension Plan.

In a world where storytelling shapes culture, Hollywood has an opportunity – and a responsibility – to lead. By cutting ties with fossil fuels, the industry can model what climate-safe retirement looks like, and align its financial future with the values of the artists and communities it serves.

Join #RetireBigOil and urge the SAG-Producers Pension Plan to act for workers.
